Searching for a fuel card no credit check option in the UK? Start with prepaid cards. The Fuel Store advertises a prepaid product without a credit check. Fleetmaxx says Maxx Control requires no formal credit checks, with identity verification instead.[1][2] A card billed after refuelling is a different proposition: Right Fuel Card says its credit applications include a credit check.[3] No deposit does not mean no assessment, and neither phrase promises approval.
- Prepaid means paying before the fill-up. It can suit a new business without an established credit record.[1]
- A security deposit ties up cash. fuelGenie describes a prepaid fallback requiring a deposit of 1.5 times the account limit.[4]
- Greenway offers deferred payment without a guarantee or security deposit. That does not mean applications involve no credit checks.[5]
Security deposit, personal guarantee and demand guarantee
Before comparing fees, establish what the provider wants you to sign or fund. These terms describe different commitments.
A personal guarantee: a promise to pay another party’s debt
For an agreement governed by English law, section 4 of the Statute of Frauds 1677 generally requires a promise to answer for another party’s debt to be evidenced in writing and signed by the person being charged, or an authorised person.[7] Ask whether a director must sign personally. A credit check does not necessarily mean you must provide a guarantee.
A security deposit: cash held as security
fuelGenie provides a concrete contractual example: its prepaid route can require a refundable security deposit alongside the account funding.[4] A deposit and a top-up therefore need separate lines in your cash-flow forecast. Ask when the deposit becomes repayable and what deductions the contract permits.
A demand guarantee or on-demand bond
Check how your agreement defines either term. If one appears in your paperwork, ask a solicitor to explain the payment trigger, maximum liability and expiry. This guide does not treat it as interchangeable with a personal guarantee, or suggest that UK fuel-card providers routinely require one.
Why a provider checks credit: you buy fuel before paying
Deferred billing leaves the provider waiting for repayment. Right Fuel Card links the application process to a credit check and says a security deposit may be a condition of acceptance.[3] That commercial risk explains why “subject to status” matters.
fuelGenie lists invoice dates of the 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd, followed by collection seven days later.[8] An indicative illustration: a purchase included in the invoice dated 9 October would be collected on 16 October, seven days after that invoice. Fuel bought earlier has been outstanding longer. This illustrates the timing only, rather than a promised credit period for every transaction.
Work backwards from your drivers’ needs. Will the agreed limit cover purchases made while an earlier bill remains unpaid? Ask how a limit increase is assessed and what happens when the available balance runs out.
Fuel card no credit check: read the actual conditions
The application may involve the business, the individual or both. fuelGenie describes using filed company accounts for a limited company and a personal check for a sole trader.[9] FuelTapp distinguishes company checks from searches leaving a trace on a sole trader’s or partnership’s personal credit record.[10]
Ask whether the search is hard or soft before authorising it. The ICO warns that numerous searches over a short period can affect a credit application.[11] An identity check is a separate issue: Maxx Control still verifies identity despite advertising no formal credit checks.[2]
Check contradictory wording too. RightPay’s page says no credit checks are required, yet also describes light credit checks.[12] Get clarification in writing. For a newly incorporated company, ask what evidence replaces filed accounts and whether the provider requires a minimum trading history.
Three payment models for a business fuel card
A credit account
A topped-up balance
A linked payment card
- Timing: each purchase reaches a nominated card immediately.
- Cash flow: depends on that underlying card.
- Check: its available funds or credit.
- Example: Allstar Credit Builder accepts a nominated debit or credit card. This is not necessarily a direct debit from a bank account.[6]
Choose the funding model before the station network. A prepaid balance must be replenished. A linked credit card uses another facility’s credit. Neither automatically gives the business a new period of interest-free funding. If your fleet also charges electric vehicles, consider the operational questions in our guide to fuel cards and electric charging.
Our offer
Greenway: no guarantee or deposit, payment after refuelling
Greenway, which publishes this guide, offers deferred payment on a credit line, without a guarantee or security deposit. That does not mean applications involve no credit checks.[5]
- No guarantee or security deposit to provide.[5]
- A single month-end invoice and early repayment of the credit line without a fee.[5]
- The European product page advertises 100% of European service stations and 1.2 million charging points. Check coverage for your UK routes.[5]
- Tolls and parking on the same account, with real-time spending limits.[5]
- VAT pre-calculated and ready to export. Check the documentation needed for your business.[5]
For companies, not sole traders or self-employed people without a company. Prices on the site are in euros: €70 account opening, €7 excluding VAT per card per month for 50–200 cards, a 1.5–2% management fee per transaction, plus 1% per transaction for 1%ForAll®. These are selected published charges: ask for a full quote.[5]

Fuel cards for new businesses, sole traders and poor credit
New businesses without filed accounts
A thin credit file is the problem RightPay and Maxx Control explicitly address.[12][2] Compare the cash needed to keep each prepaid balance funded. Do not budget on an automatic move to credit: Allstar’s upgrade depends on usage and credit criteria.[6]
Sole traders and small partnerships
Sole traders can apply to fuelGenie, subject to assessment.[9] Greenway is not intended for sole traders.[5] Section 189(1) of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 includes certain partnerships of two or three persons within “individual”. That definition alone does not establish whether a particular agreement is regulated. Ask the provider to identify its status.[13] The English-law guarantee rule above should not be assumed to settle every UK jurisdiction.
Businesses with bad credit or a CCJ
The ICO identifies county court judgments and insolvency information among credit-reference data.[11] Prepaid may be worth discussing, but “for poor credit” is not guaranteed acceptance. Ask what checks remain and whether a deposit is required. A product called prepaid can still request security, as fuelGenie demonstrates.[4]
7 questions to ask before signing
- Whose credit file will you search? Ask whether it is a hard or soft search and when consent is requested.
- What must I pay before the first fill-up? Separate the deposit, usable top-up and opening charges.
- Must anyone give a personal or bank guarantee? Request the wording before signing.
- What is my usable limit? Check how unpaid invoices, pending purchases and top-ups affect it.
- When is payment collected? Obtain invoice dates, collection dates and the process for a failed payment.
- What does my actual usage cost? Ask about card fees, surcharges, low usage, inactivity and cancellation.
- How do I recover unused money? Confirm balance refunds, deposit release and account closure in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Can a new business get a fuel card?
Yes: Maxx Control targets start-ups and RightPay targets limited credit histories. Check their current requirements rather than assuming a new company qualifies automatically.[2][12]
Can a sole trader get a fuel card?
fuelGenie accepts applications from sole traders with a personal credit assessment. Greenway is for companies, not sole traders.[9][5]
Does applying for a fuel card hurt my credit score?
It depends on the search. FuelTapp distinguishes company and personal-file effects. The ICO warns about repeated searches. Ask before submitting several applications.[10][11]
Can I get a fuel card with bad credit or a CCJ?
Discuss prepaid products such as Maxx Control, which targets poor credit. That positioning does not establish acceptance of every CCJ or every applicant.[2]
