Electronic toll badge

Windscreen toll badge for fleets: non-stop passage at tolls and partner car parks, consolidated billing, VAT on tolls deductible even for passenger cars.

Definition

A company electronic toll badge (télébadge in France) is an electronic unit fixed to the windscreen that lets fleet vehicles pass toll barriers without stopping and access partner car parks. Every vehicle’s toll crossings are grouped on one consolidated invoice, which eliminates toll expense reports and secures VAT recovery.

In detail

A badge is interoperable across all French motorway networks, whatever the concession operator: a single subscription covers every electronic toll lane. Most offers also include access to hundreds of car parks, and some ranges extend coverage to neighbouring motorway networks in Europe.

On the tax side, French motorway tolls are subject to VAT on their full amount (BOFiP, BOI-TVA-BASE-10-20-40-10). This VAT is deductible under ordinary rules: unlike fuel, the deduction exclusion that applies to passenger cars does not apply to tolls (BOFiP, BOI-TVA-DED-40-40). Deduction still requires a compliant proof: the receipt or invoice must state the VAT, the company’s full identification, the vehicle’s registration number, its user and the business purpose of the trip. The badge’s itemised invoice, which traces each crossing per vehicle, makes exactly this justification easier.

Worked example

A sales rep accumulates €60 (incl. VAT) of tolls in a month with a passenger car. That amount contains €10 of VAT (20% rate), 100% deductible as long as the trips are business-related and the badge statement identifies the company, the vehicle and the purpose of the journey — whereas VAT on the same car’s fuel would only have been 80% deductible.

Frequently asked questions

Is VAT on tolls recoverable for a passenger car?

Yes. The deduction exclusion that applies to passenger cars does not cover tolls: the VAT is fully deductible whatever the vehicle type, provided the business purpose of the trip is documented and the company holds a compliant receipt or invoice.

Does one badge work on every motorway?

Yes, electronic tolling is interoperable between French motorway operators: the same badge is accepted on all networks. Depending on the offer, it also opens partner car parks and, in some cases, motorways in other European countries.
